UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is a flagship initiative launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD). It aims to enhance mobile governance and bring multiple government services to citizens through a single, unified mobile platform. Launched in 2017, UMANG is a comprehensive digital solution that allows citizens to access services provided by the central, state, and local governments as well as various public sector departments. UMANG has played a transformative role in digital governance by offering a convenient, one-stop platform integrating over 1,000 services from 200+ departments and states. These services span sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, transport, public distribution systems, utilities, and financial inclusion. Through this initiative, the government has created a more transparent, efficient, and citizen-friendly governance system that simplifies access to essential services.
UMANG has shown remarkable growth across multiple dimensions since its inception in 2017-18. The platform has experienced substantial increases in registered users, available services, integrated departments, completed transactions, and state participation over the seven years.
The number of registered users has grown exponentially, from just 0.52 crore (5.2 million) in 2017-18 to 6.31 crore (63.1 million) in 2023-24. This represents a staggering increase of over 1100% in user base, indicating widespread adoption and acceptance of the UMANG platform among Indian citizens. The most significant jump occurred between 2019-20 and 2020-21, possibly due to increased digital adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The variety of services available through UMANG has expanded dramatically. Starting with 210 services in 2017-18, it peaked at 22,086 services in 2021-22 before slightly decreasing to 22,181 in 2023-24. This massive service expansion (over 10,000% increase) suggests a concerted effort to digitize and integrate a wide array of government services into a single, accessible platform.
The number of government departments integrated into UMANG has grown steadily, from 38 in the first year to a peak of 320 in 2022-23, before slightly decreasing to 207 in 2023-24. This integration across various government departments indicates a push towards creating a comprehensive e-governance ecosystem, although the recent decrease might suggest a consolidation or streamlining of services.
The volume of transactions processed through UMANG has seen consistent year-on-year growth. From 9.98 crore transactions in 2017-18, it has risen to 418.31 crore in 2023-24, marking a growth of over 4000%. This substantial increase in transactions underscores the platform’s increasing utility and the growing comfort of citizens in using digital services for government-related tasks.
The number of states participating in UMANG increased from 7 in 2017-18 to a peak of 34 in 2022-23 before slightly decreasing to 29 in 2023-24. This broad state-level adoption suggests a successful push towards nationwide digital governance, although the recent decrease might indicate some challenges in maintaining uniform participation across all states.
Overall, the data paints a picture of rapid and substantial growth for UMANG, particularly in terms of user base, service offerings, and transaction volumes. The platform appears to have significantly advanced India’s digital governance initiatives, providing citizens with increasingly comprehensive access to government services. However, the slight decreases in some metrics for 2023-24 might warrant further investigation to ensure continued growth and adoption of the platform across all dimensions.
