Overview

In an increasingly digital world, healthcare systems have been transforming rapidly to provide efficient, accessible, and transparent services to patients. Central to this transformation in India are four crucial indicators: Onboarded Hospitals, e-Hospital Transactions, ORS-Enabled Hospitals, and ORS Appointments. These indicators not only represent the digitization of healthcare services but also play a significant role in improving patient experiences across the country. eHospital is a digital platform designed to streamline and improve healthcare services. It acts as a bridge between patients, hospitals, and healthcare providers. Through eHospital, individuals can access various healthcare-related services online, such as scheduling appointments, viewing lab reports, checking blood availability, and even paying medical bills. This digital approach aims to reduce the hassle of traditional in-person visits, enhance accessibility, and improve overall patient experience.

Trends & Insights

The e-Hospital initiative in India demonstrates a remarkable digital transformation in healthcare service delivery from fiscal years 2015-16 through 2024-25. Beginning with just 6 onboarded hospitals in 2015-16, the system expanded significantly to reach a peak of 1,043 hospitals by 2022-23, representing a 174-fold increase over seven years. Interestingly, the data shows a notable decline in onboarded hospitals in the following years, dropping to 767 in 2023-24 and further to 595 in 2024-25, which may indicate either a consolidation phase, data reporting changes, or potentially some hospitals withdrawing from the system.

Despite this recent decrease in participating facilities, the cumulative e-Hospital transactions demonstrate consistent and substantial growth throughout the decade, increasing from approximately 1.57 million in the first year to over 60.62 billion by 2024-25—a staggering 3,870-fold increase. This growth suggests widespread adoption and increasing reliance on digital healthcare management systems across India’s healthcare infrastructure. The most dramatic transaction growth occurred between 2017-18 and 2018-19, when transactions more than tripled from about 273 million to 872 million.

The Online Registration System (ORS) component shows steady progress, with ORS-enabled hospitals growing from 39 in 2015-16 to 873 in 2024-25, representing a 22-fold increase. Unlike the overall hospital participation pattern, ORS-enabled facilities continued to grow even in recent years, with a significant jump from 565 to 873 facilities between 2023-24 and 2024-25. Similarly, ORS appointments have shown consistent year-over-year growth, rising from approximately 119,000 in the first year to over 10.56 million by 2024-25, an 89-fold increase that reflects growing patient comfort with digital appointment systems.

This comprehensive data illustrates India’s substantial progress in digitizing healthcare services, streamlining patient management, and improving healthcare accessibility through technology. The continued growth in transactions and appointments despite fluctuations in participating hospitals suggests increasing efficiency and transaction volume per facility, potentially indicating successful integration of digital systems into everyday healthcare operations throughout India. This digital healthcare revolution has likely contributed significantly to improving patient experience, reducing administrative burdens, and enhancing healthcare delivery efficiency across the country.
