Overview

Percentage of Households Covered by Health Insurance or Health Schemes measures the proportion of households where at least one usual member is enrolled in a health insurance plan or covered under a health scheme. It reflects the accessibility and reach of health coverage within a population, highlighting the level of financial protection available against health-related expenses. The coverage can stem from government-sponsored schemes, private insurance providers, or employer-provided plans. A higher percentage signifies better financial risk mitigation for medical emergencies, fostering improved healthcare access and reducing the burden of out-of-pocket expenditure. Conversely, a lower percentage may indicate gaps in affordability, awareness, or availability of health insurance options. This indicator is crucial for policymakers, as it helps evaluate the effectiveness of existing health schemes and identify populations vulnerable to healthcare inequities. Tracking this data over time can inform strategies to expand health coverage, ensuring universal health care and financial security for all households.

Trends & Insights

According to the NFHS-5 report, Rajasthan’s health insurance coverage was 87.8% (the highest in the country), followed closely by Andhra Pradesh at 80.2%, demonstrating these state’s successful implementation of health coverage schemes. Several northeastern states showed promising results, with Meghalaya achieving 69% coverage and Assam reaching 66.7%. These figures have demonstrated the region’s commitment to healthcare accessibility despite geographical challenges and remote populations. In contrast, some of the most populous states have reported worryingly low coverage rates. For instance, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar recorded coverage of 15.9% and 17.4%, respectively, indicating significant gaps in healthcare protection for their residents. The southern states have exhibited varying levels of success. While Tamil Nadu and Telangana achieved relatively high coverage of 66.5% and 69.2%, respectively, Karnataka’s coverage stood at 31.8%, suggesting regional differences in policy implementation and effectiveness. Kerala, known for its superior healthcare metrics, reported a moderate coverage rate of 57.8%. The union territories present a particularly striking contrast. While Lakshadweep showed a robust 67.7% coverage, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded the lowest coverage in the country at merely 1.8%. This stark difference highlights how geographical isolation and administrative capabilities can significantly impact healthcare coverage. Overall, more than half of Indian households reported that they did not have any access to health insurance coverage, and this statistic underscores the considerable work that remains to be done in expanding healthcare protection across the country.
