According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), internet connections in India are categorised as either broadband or narrowband depending on how quickly they transfer data. Broadband connections, which offer quicker data access appropriate for streaming, video conferencing, online education, e-governance, and other high-bandwidth applications, have a minimum download speed of 2 Mbps or more. Typically providing low-data apps, email, and basic internet services like simple surfing, narrowband connections run at speeds around 2 Mbps. The number of subscribers in each category shows how widely high-speed internet is used in both urban and rural locations.
Increased productivity, greater support for the digital economy, and easier access to cutting-edge digital services are all indicated by a larger proportion of broadband subscribers. It also shows how far we’ve come in closing the regional digital divide. By keeping an eye on these numbers, planners, telecom providers, and legislators can better analyse connection gaps, gauge the readiness of emerging technologies like 5G, and launch focused projects to increase access to high-speed, reasonably priced internet for equitable socioeconomic development.
