Indicator Summary

Overview

Crime rate of offences against public tranquility refers to the number of reported incidents per lakh population that disturb peace, harmony, and public order in society. These charges typically involve inciting animosity between groups based on caste, religion, language, or community, rioting, unlawful assembly, and affray. In order to give a comparable metric across states and time periods, the crime rate is computed by dividing the total number of such instances by the population and then normalizing it per lakh people. This indicator shows how frequently occurrences occur as well as how seriously they disturb social order.

Maintaining law and order, social harmony, and democratic stability all depend on monitoring the crime rate of infractions against public tranquilly. A growing rate could be an indication of deeper problems that call for focused responses, such political upheaval, socioeconomic inequality, or interpersonal conflicts. This measure is used by researchers, law enforcement, and policymakers to create plans for social awareness programs, community policing, and conflict prevention. In order to prevent such disruptions, it also aids in allocating funds for improved law enforcement and policing. By monitoring this rate, governments can promote peaceful coexistence, safeguard citizens’ rights, and ensure a secure environment essential for economic development and societal well-being.
