Indicator Summary

The academic rationale behind setting up the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) in India was to strengthen the country’s foundation in basic sciences and to integrate high-quality teaching with cutting-edge research. Policymakers recognised that long-term scientific advancement and technological innovation depend on a robust ecosystem of fundamental research in disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and earth sciences. IISERs were designed to address gaps in science education by promoting inquiry-based learning, early exposure to research, and interdisciplinary approaches. Their academic structure emphasises strong conceptual understanding, laboratory training, and hands-on research from the undergraduate level onward. This model aims to cultivate scientific thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, rather than focusing solely on applied or professional training.

Another key academic objective was to attract talented students to careers in science and research, thereby countering the declining interest in the basic sciences. By offering integrated programmes and opportunities for mentored research, IISERs encourage students to pursue advanced studies and research careers in academia, industry, and national laboratories. IISERs were also envisioned as hubs for high-quality research and faculty development, fostering collaboration across disciplines and institutions. Academically, they serve as benchmarks for excellence in science education and research, contributing to the creation of knowledge, innovation, and a sustainable scientific workforce essential for India’s long-term development.
